Brazilian Portuguese LQA
LQA stands for linguistic quality assurance: the process of scrutinizing a game, linguistically speaking, to find UI and text errors and bugs.
This phase usually happens just before releasing a localization, whether for the full game, an update or a DLC. It’s usually billed per hour, and it’s extremely important for a smooth launch in any language.
How does Iguana Localize approach LQA?
Our team at Iguana Localize is made up of people who can find a needle in a haystack. Our eyes have been trained over thousands of hours of testing games across different platforms and genres.
We can test our own translations as well as translations done by other teams.
If you need game localization from scratch, check our Brazilian Portuguese game localization page.
Organization and communication are key
So we don’t waste our time (and, consequently, your money), we agree on a test plan together, something like this:
| What | How | Expected time |
|---|---|---|
| Menus and options | Open the game → Navigate through all the menus from the title screen | 30 min to 1 hour |
| Tutorial | Open the game → New game → Go through the tutorial | 1 to 2 hours |
| Story | Open the game → New game → Skip the tutorial with the cheat code IguanaIsTheBest → Skip battles with the cheat IguanaWins → Check the dialogue | 3 to 4 hours |
Reporting bugs
We report bugs as we go in a live table, so you can follow our progress and see what kind of issues we’re finding and their priority. It usually looks like this:
| Screenshot | Issue | Suggested fix | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|
![]() | Missing characters in the “Opções” (Options) button: the ç and õ don’t render. | Use a font that supports Portuguese characters (ç, ã, õ, é…). | Critical |
![]() | Text overflow in the “Carregar jogo salvo” (Load Saved Game) button. | Drop “salvo” (“saved”), as it’s implicit: “Carregar jogo”. | Major |
![]() | Inclusivity: “Bem-vindo” is masculine, so it assumes the player is male. | Change it to “Receba as boas-vindas a The Journey of Iguana Localize”, so the game welcomes every player. | Minor |
Corrections and green light!
Game localization and LQA have something in common: they both need cooperation between the developer and the localization studio to get the job done well.
If authorized, we can crush text bugs on the spot. Development bugs need to be fixed in your game’s engine, for example by switching to a font that supports the missing characters, or by making the text smaller so it fits inside the button.
Pricing
We charge between $30 and $40 per hour for LQA. Talk to us about an indie dev discount.
FAQ
Experience tells us that this overloads the LQA phase, as AI translations typically need more corrections than a good human localization. AI also fluctuates in style and doesn’t adapt jokes, rhymes, songs or dialogue nuance well.
It’s an essential pass to make sure your players experience the best your game has to offer, provided you have the means for it.
You should, and so are we. We are available to sign NDAs. From our side, all our linguists sign an NDA with us and are frequently reminded to secure their folders, be extra cautious with their laptops and take a lot of care when publishing on social media. We don’t take this lightly.
At the moment, only PC. If you need a full pass on consoles, we can recommend good partners.
As we say in Brazil, it doesn’t hurt to ask. We’re here for you.
